Planning Your Decorating Project

Written By:

Debby Strasmann, Co-Owner, Sew Custom Curtain Company

My name is Debby Strasmann.  I am not an interior designer.  The advice offered here, comes from my life experience as a business owner (planner), and as a busy mom of young twin boys (organizer).

Decorating, and as with any life projects, can be difficult to achieve without a plan.

The question is, where do I start?

Planning your decorating project:

Step #1

Set a decorating budget

Decide how much you can spend on your decorating project.  You may even want to make a short term and long term goal for the room so that you can successfully save money for the bigger ticket items in the long term.

When you are setting your budget for your project, make a list of the furniture, accents, plants, bedding, curtains, etc., along with the estimated cost for each item.

Step #2

Pick a theme

By picking a theme for a room, this gives you direction, and a clear picture of what the room should look like when complete.

If you do not already have a theme in mind, please consider one of our themes in this website:

Step #3

Check your garage, basement, closets, etc.

There is a good chance you already have some of the goods you need in your garage, basement, closets, etc.

If you have an old beat up accent table, lamp, or vase in your garage, get some spray paint or acrylic craft paint and do a quickie fix up on it.

If you have some old pillows not being used in your closets, purchase or sew covers to match your theme.

Step #4

Decorate:                     The best part!

Go shopping, gather the items you desire, stay within your theme and budget, rearrange furniture, and most of all, have fun and get creative.

Be sure to follow through with finishing  touches  and small details.

Study the room and keep an eye out for the perfect accent piece, even when your not out shopping for them.
